Myth of the month · No. 2 · July 2026
It knew your job. It knew about Thursday's review. It answered in exactly the tone you once asked for. So it must be building a memory of you, right? Press play and watch what actually happens to your question.
Verdict: mostly myth. There's no growing memory of you inside the model. There's a folder: saved notes, standing instructions, and whatever this chat holds. It reads the folder fresh, every single time, and answers like it never forgot. Delete the folder and you're a stranger again. The kernel of truth: the folder is real, it lives on someone's server, and you can usually see and edit it in settings. Curate it deliberately.
The technical name for thisretrieval. Products call the folder "memory" or "custom instructions." The machinery that fetches the right file at the right moment is called retrieval-augmented generation, RAG for short.
This is the flip side of Scene 5: the desk is what it sees during one chat. The folder is what gets loaded onto the desk when the next chat starts.
